The Toe Tactic + shorts by Emily Hubley

Saturday, June 11 at the Hollywood Theatre, 7pm, $8
Emily Hubley has been making animated shorts for 30 years. Her hand-drawn films explore personal memory and the turbulence of emotional life. In addition to her first feature, The Toe Tactic, she has created animated segments for narrative and documentary films, including Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Blue Vinyl and Willliam Kunstler: Disturbing the Universe. A daughter of pioneer animators Faith and John Hubley, she worked on Faithʼs films at the Hubley Studio, Inc. from 1977 to 2001. Tonightʼs program features:
Pigeon Within (2000, 4.5 mins) A young womanʼs encounter with her guardian angel prompts her to reconsider death, memory and her beliefs. Directed by Emily Hubley, this award-winning short was shown at MoMA and many festivals. Music by Yo La Tengo.
Set Set Spike (2002, 6 mins) A single motherʼs personal ritual combines her history, poetry and a volleyball-inspired workout. Directed by Emily Hubley, this was also a festival favorite. Music by Yo La Tengo. Cast: Miram Shor and Max Rosenthal.
The Toe Tactic (2008, 84 mins) This animated/live-action feature film follows Mona (2011 Tony-nominee Lily Rabe), who is jarred by a delayed grief for her late father when she finds out her childhood home has been sold. Her plight becomes the subject of an esoteric card game played in another dimension by four animated dogs. Over one problematic but magical weekend, the dogsʼ mischief helps her to reconcile her loss and reconnect with the world. Written, directed and animated by Emily Hubley, this festival favorite features music from Yo La Tengo (Emilyʼs sister Georgia is in the band) and a cast including Daniel London, Kevin Corrigan, Jane Lynch, Mary Kay Place and Xander Berkeley. Voices include David Cross, Andrea Martin and Eli Wallach. Voices include David Cross and Eli Wallach. Trailer is here
