I always found the characterization of chickfactor as being the bible for the so-called “twee” indie kids to be quite insulting — and I especially abhor pigeonholing when it comes from our competition (well, not really*). but whatever you call it — and I’m pretty sure I was the one who brought the word “twee” to U.S. music journalism in an issue of spin circa ’92 (but who cares), for which I deeply apologize — america is going crazy for some of the stuff chickfactor is crazy for (the kinks, belle & sebastian, cat power, etc). first there was that shins song called “pam berry.” now the stuff on the *juno* soundtrack must jangle with the times — congrats to the stellar label rhino for their first billboard number one, as well as to moldy peach lady kimya dawson — perhaps she’ll bring k records back to the limelight. here is an article about the little movie’s soundtrack. congrats also to miss cat power, whose new sort of covers record landed at no. 12 on the same week’s billboard chart (and she’s got a song on the *juno* soundtrack as well). oh and how is the movie? well, it’s a fun movie (I’m not an anti-ab type and I don’t think this is part of some right-wing propaganda to keep teens pregnant in hollywood; I also found *knocked up* pretty damn funny). perhaps someone will have the good sense to put the pines music in a soundtrack one of these days too.
*yes, I am jealous of pitchfork for having their own atp, and for poaching some cf staffer(s), and, well, we still conduct a more entertaining interview, we just don’t do enough of them…
