this is really sad too, though not unexpected. when I saw him live a few years ago at the royal festival hall, I couldn’t believe that he was about the same age as my dad. he seemed so youthful by comparison, which must have been the rock and roll lifestyle (which is also kind of what killed him: liver cancer). he did still outlive my father by a few months. he was one of the greats.
